I am a birth doula, attending births in homes, hospitals and birth centers. I support laboring women, as well as their families, during the birth of their babies. I employ water, acupressure, massage, and other comfort measures for the best chance of a healthy outcome, for mother and baby.

I believe that women's bodies are designed to birth safely and efficiently, if the women are encouraged to tune into the birth experience. The birth atmosphere in my area is very medical in the hospitals, and women need accurate information to make good decisions, and for their births to be autonomous.

I began my doula practice in 1993, by attending the birth of a close friend. I was both in awe of the magic of birth, as well as disturbed by the many ’routine’ procedures they subjected her to, all for their convenience. My friend did not feel any of the staff was listening to her wishes, or trying to accomodate her birth plan. That birth taught me why women need an advocate during birth. I have helped (and can help) many women have the best birth experience possible for their situation.

I prefer home births, but since most of my area’s population chooses hospital births, then most of my practice is in the hospital. Most women who decide to birth at home choose this option because they want to be in control of their birth experience, and they feel safest in the familiar surroundings of their home. These women are willing to transport to the hospital for their births, if it is found they actually need medical attention. However, only a very small percentage of women need medical attention during their births.

My goal is to educate women through childbirth classes about their birthing choices, and to present homebirth as a safe, viable option in most situations. For my clients who choose hospital birth, my goal is to be their advocate and defender of their birth plan, so their births can be great beginnings to the start of their new families.

In the interest of ’personal experience’, I have five children. I have been pregnant or nursing since December of 1990! My children have been born in hospitals, and also at home, in water, with my husband catching them. I have experience with miscarriage, inductions, surgical births, home births, very long labors (4 days) and very short labors (3 hours). I teach a childbirth education class titled "The Art of Birthing", and it comes highly recommended by physicians and midwives in my area. I am available to answer questions about pregnancy and childbirth, as well as breastfeeding and baby care.
