Pregnancy, family building, birth, adoption and parenting all bring a tremendous transition to a woman's life. Each stage has a unique set of transitions for a woman and those close to her. While each step typically brings joy and anticipation, many women will have transitory states of distress or may even be overwhelmed throughout these transitions. I work with women to make these experiences bearable when they are overwhelming and to support psychological and emotional growth and soulful attunement throughout these times.
Psychotherapy can foster health and growth in a variety of ways:
- Psychological evaluation and treatment for mood disorders and eating disorders
- Support and stress management during infertility and family building
- Risk assessment and counseling for women with a history of emotional difficulties who are preparing for pregnancy
- Coping with emotions related to an unplanned pregnancy
- Screening and ongoing assessment and treatment for antenatal and postpartum depression and anxiety
- Grief, loss, or feelings of guilt related to a past miscarriage, abortion, stillborn or newborn death
- Anticipatory anxiety about the health of her pregnancy
- Addressing concerns about parenting or about managing the responsibility of caring for a baby
- Addressing concerns about psychotropic medications while pregnant or breastfeeding, or difficulties communicating needs to providers
- Processing an unexpected or traumatic birth experience
- Early parenting; promoting attachment, identity transitions, coping with responsibilities, skill building, parenting as a couple
- Support for exploring self esteem, body image and intimacy
- Lending library
- No cost postpartum depression support group (www.perinatalmoodsupport.com)
