We, Karen and Martine, started a midwifery/home birth practice because we both feel committed to caring for women and families throughout a woman's life cycle. Women deserve the right to be heard and cared for in a sensitive, loving manner. We, as women, midwives and mothers, believe in your innate ability to nurture your own and your baby's spirit and body during pregnancy, birth and beyond.
We provide personalized care with cultural sensitivity. We encourage an open dialog regarding all plans of care, offering true informed consent.
We'll talk to you before pregnancy to help you identify your needs and resources. We'll do your regular PAP screening and well-woman visit in your home. We can discuss and provide all methods of birth control including natural family planning. We promote preventive health care (screening, nutrition, exercise, lifestyle changes and stress reduction). We can help you treat any infections with natural remedies or pharmaceuticals.
Our focus during pregnancy care is to form a partnership with you and your family which enables you to identify and respond to your needs (physical, emotional and spiritual) and the needs of your growing baby. We encourage you to tap into your family and community resources as you prepare yourself for parenthood.
Our services are provided in the privacy and comfort of your home. If medical complications were to arise, we have hospital privileges. We speak French, Haitian Creole, and Spanish.
We would love to talk to you.
Karen Jefferson decided to become a midwife a few minutes after she and her husband delivered their second child in the bathtub of their Brooklyn apartment. "Women CAN do this! Maybe I can reach a few if I become a midwife." She graduated from State University of New York in 2000 with a Masters of Science in Midwifery, and spent two years in a busy inner-city birth center/hospital practice before teaming up with her partner Martine Jean-Baptiste to start JJB Midwifery. Her own three home births and the many wonderful women whose births she attended at Bellevue Birth Center and Hospital gave her confidence in women's strength and ability to give birth. Karen has received training in lactation support as well.
Martine Jean-Baptiste
Martine Jean-Baptiste has been involved in women's health since 1986 after graduating with her BSN. She has worked with women and their families throughout the lifecycle in a variety of settings. Professional roles include Registered Nurse (maternal/child health in large inner city hospital, home care, freestanding birth center, alternative to incarceration program for women), professional labor support and childbirth educator. She has served on the board of the Childbirth Education Association of Metropolitan New York (CEA/MNY) since 1993.
Martine graduated from SUNY Health Science Center @ Bklyn with an MS in Midwifery. As a midwife, she worked in a large inner city hospital as well as a freestanding birth center practicing full scope midwifery.
In June 2002, Martine and her business partner, Karen Jefferson, started their homebirth practice, JJB Midwifery. They provide preconceptual conseling, well woman gynecology, contraception and homebirth. All care is individualized and provided in the privacy/intimacy and comfort of their client's home. They have hospital privileges.
Martine strongly believes in women's innate ability to care for themselves and their families. She believes in "supporting women's right to safe, supportive, and informed healthcare throughout the lifecycle."

So fun to see midwives in Brooklyn! I visit Park Slope often to visit a friend and I am delighted to know you are catching babies there!

Karen caught our baby in Aug. 2005, and she was wonderful! I wish all women had the same empowering experience that I had giving birth to my daughter in our livingroom. It was amazing.

I cannot stress enough how amazing these 2 midwives are- as caregivers and women.
Martine caught our baby last Sept. It was a powerful experience. I felt relaxed, safe and reassured. Nothing beats giving birth at home.
Martine and Karen are respectful of the entire process of pregnancy and birth and no matter what time of the day I would page them, they would return my call immediately! My husband and I were blown away by the whole experience. If you are thinking about a homebir
