Hello! North Country Midwifery is a home birth midwifery service. My services include continuity-of-care throughout your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum recovery. I stress the importance of excellent nutrition, education of the childbearing process and informed decision-making. Family involvement is encouraged.
I respect birth as a natural process and rite of passage in the life of a woman and her family. I would like you, as one of my clients, to feel actively involved in the health of your own pregnancy. I would encourage you to prepare for your baby’s birth by making positive choices, reading, and taking childbirth classes. Through regular care, I watch to make sure that your pregnancy remains within normal parameters. If there is any concern, a physician-consult or ultrasound can be arranged.
As your pregnancy progresses, I give you a reasonable list of supplies to gather for the birth. The items I will bring include a waterproof fetal doppler, herbs and homeopathic remedies, birth safety medications, sterile instruments, and newborn safety equipment. I also bring a birth ball and birth stool, helpful tools for laboring in a supported upright position. I work with two compassionate assistants who provide labor support and help with the birth.
As you plan for your birth, you may decide to invite family or friends to share with you in the experience, or you may choose to birth more privately. Laboring in the familiar surroundings of home provides comfort and gives you the confidence to try different positions, vocalize, eat, or bathe as you choose; birth then unfolds in its own natural rhythm. Vaginal birth after a previous Cesarean-section delivery (VBAC) is an option, provided that certain eligibility requirements are met. Waterbirth is another wonderful option for labor and/or birth; we can discuss how to plan for a home waterbirth by renting a birthing pool.
My education and training include a B.A. in Psychology from Carleton College, childbirth education training with Informed Birth & Parenting, a 5-year midwifery apprenticeship with Concord Midwifery Service, completion of the Massachusetts Midwives Alliance's Midwifery Studies course, study at the NH Technical Institute, Phlebotomy Certification, ongoing certification in Neonatal Resuscitation, and continuing professional education. I am currently in nursing school working toward my RN. I serve on the the Newborn Screening Advisory Committee, the NH Midwives Association, and the NH Midwifery Council.
I began my midwifery training in 1993 and earned my NH-Certified Midwife credential in 1999. I practiced for 6 years in the Lakes Region as owner of the homebirth service Moonrise Midwifery. In July 2005, I relocated to Colebrook and opened North Country Midwifery Service to serve women in this region of the state without access to homebirth midwifery care. I became licensed in Vermont in 2007, enabling me to cross the Connecticut River to attend births! It is important to me to work within the protocols of safe practice and the midwifery model of care, while empowering women to experience the strength of birth.
MY SERVICES INCLUDE:
Free initial consultation
Complete personalized prenatal care
The use of natural treatments for common problems
Basic gynecological care and STD screening
Prenatal care and testing

I bring my "office" (supplies and equipment) to you, for in-home care during your prenatal and postpartum visits. I accept healthy, low-risk women as candidates for home birth. In NH I serve the North Country area, from Littleton up to the Colebrook area. In Vermont's Northeast Kingdom I will travel as far west as St. Johnsbury and Newport, and cover the area east of those towns toward the state border. A reasonable travel fee is assessed for making the home visits, based on your distance from my home.
Hope to talk to you soon.

Monica delivered my fourth baby Ayden. It was my first home birth. I loved that Monica came right to the house for the prenatal visits. She made me feel very comforable and relaxed. When I was in labor Monica was right there and she kept me focused. The care during the delivery and after was the best I have ever had. I will always treasure the memories of my last and best birth. Thank you Monica!

Monica attended the birth of our second child, Bodhi. Although we had a great hospital experience with our first child, we felt homebirth would be more nurturing, empowering, child-friendly (so our older child could attend) and just as safe as hospital birth for us. My husband was initially concerned about hiring a "hippie-dippie" midwife but once he met Monica his fears were allayed by her professionalism, knowledge and experience. She was attentive to all our concerns, and answered question

having a hospital birth was not an option for me. i have never wanted one and am very happy that all five of my children were born at home.
why not an option for me? i insist on knowing as much as possible about anything that will affect my life to this degree, and i read everything i could get my hands on. after all of my research, i decided that hospital births are for ladies who have at risk pregnancies.
monica was the least "doctorish" midwife i've had. i have had

We cannot express how wonderful Monica made our pregnancy and birth of our son! From start to finish, she was there every step of the way to encourage, advise, support, and provide exactly what we needed. I looked forward to Monica's home visits, and she always made sure to include my 3 yr old daughter every time she came, which was crucial to helping our little girl understand about the new baby on the way. During labor, she empowered me to make decisions about how I wished to birth, and I was

Monica assisted at the birth of our first two children and was our midwife for the birth of our third child born in June 2003. We highly recommend Monica for prenatal, delivery and post-natal care. We attempted a home birth with all three, and although two of them ended up being hospital births, Monica was professional, wise and caring throughout and each birth was a wonderful experience. In our home Monica cared deeply for each one of us with a quiet calm style. In the hospital Monica helped us

Monica assisted us in the birth of our third child, Isaac, in April 2003. Home visits were such a treat, especially with two other small children that I would have otherwise had to bring to office appointments. Monica really understood that pregnancy and birth is a family event and made Nathan and our children feel part of the entire process. When it came time for our birth, Monica was there from start to finish, over 24 hours! Though she was never intrusive, she was there when I needed her a

Monica is one of the most powerful women I have ever met. She has a way with providing prenatal care and assisting with the delivery of homebirths which is like having you best friend being there holding your hand and encouraging you. She is gentle, kind, and competent. When she works with you, you and your family are the most important people in her world at that moment. I highly recommend Monica for a wonderful home birth experience.

Monica was just what I wanted for my prenatal visits and my daughter's birth. As a VBAC client I had some unique concerns and wishes. She handled them all professionally and competently. She is also very intuitive and supportive. I was able to put my trust in her skill, experience, knowledge, and instinct and have a wonderful empowering homebirth. I am so grateful for the gentle and safe way my daughter entered the world. I would be more than happy to discuss vbac with anyone seeking a homeb

Monica helped my wife deliver our third child (Samuel) on May 31st 2002. She is competent and professional yet compassionate and gentle. As a husband and father, It was hard for me to "warm up" to the homebirth idea. I wanted my wife to be happy and comfortable, but I was worried. Monica helped me feel more comfortable without pressuring me. Under Monica's direction, our experience was absolutely FIRST CLASS; she knows what she is doing and I now advocate for "homebirthing with Monica wholeh
