I consider pregnancy and birth to be natural and normal events in a
woman’s life, while honoring them as empowering and spiritual
experiences as well. I believe that by having a midwife who respects
this as an amazing, transformative time for a woman, her partner, and
family, the space can be held for women to give birth in full
awareness. I have been privileged to attend numerous waterbirths and see it as a wonderful way to manage the intensity of labor as well as a peaceful entrance for the baby.
As a midwife some of my roles include sharing my knowledge
and experience, so that you may make informed choices; supporting this
new physical, and emotional event; assessing and taking action if a
situation requires medical attention; encouraging a process of
discovery into the parents you are becoming. I believe that you were
made to do this and provide close attention and monitoring as a
confirmation of my trust. Through this we would also note an imbalance
requiring different attention and would act accordingly.
The blend of your self knowledge, our
combined intuition, and my clinical skills, provides the guides for
creating an optimal pregnancy and birth experience.
Midwives have been serving women throughout history. In June of 2005 the British Medical Journal published the landmark CPM 2000 Statistics Project
which showed that care with a Certified Professional Midwife (like
myself) is as safe if not safer for women with low risk pregnancies.
The study showed that midwives had lower intervention rates, lower
C-section rates, lower neonatal mortality rates and higher rates of
satisfaction for mothers than those receiving hospital based medical
care.
