She has taken the place of the role once provided by the mothers mother. A Doula "mothers the mother". She offers childbirth wisdom, nurturing and care just as her mother would give.
Because so many women live far away from home, or  because of her mothers work schedule, or perhaps her mothers lack of breastfeeding and natural birthing experience, doulas services have become a part of the birthing experience for many women. In many hospitals, doulas have become a part of the birthing team, realizing that having a doula has many benefits for both mother and baby.
