Welcome to Birth in the Tradition™ midwifery service page.  Birth in the Tradition™ has been serving families in Georgia since 1980.The name Birth in the Tradition™ was chosen because the service reflects the original midwifery model of care. We believe that pregnancy and birth is a normal and healthy part of a woman’s life which should be treated that way unless, otherwise indicated.  Although pregnancy and birth is delicate in nature, it should not be overcome by fear and distrust as it is commonly done in our western culture.

Instead, pregnancy should be regarded as a rite of passage in which birth culminates one phase of life and initiates one into another phase called parenthood.  It is the point in time when one should become empowered by the experience of life growing inside of her womb led by the care and knowledge acquired by her midwife (or doctor), and the protection of fear and danger by her community. It is the time where the couple should be able to draw on the wisdom of those who have traveled this journey in life. In many traditional societies, “it takes a village to raise a child” is not merely a concept but a way of life beginning at conception.  This is the purpose and focus of Birth in the Tradition™ to guide, empower and protect.

Birth in the Tradition™ provides prenatal, birth, postpartum and early parent education and services including water births and VBAC’s. The service Birth in the Tradition™ does not offer is provided on a referral basis.  Birth in the Tradition™ has a network made up of OBGYN’s, C.N.M.’s, Holistic Pediatricians, Holistic Family Physician’s, Natural Paths, Homeopaths, Herbalist, Chiropractor’s, Lactation Consultants, Pregnancy Massage Therapist, Pregnancy Photographers, Belly Casters, Childbirth Educator’s Labor and Postpartum Doula’s, and Pregnancy Fitness Instructor’s.

What does make Birth in the Tradition™ stand out uniquely, are its traditional styles, approaches and birthing practices. In addition to its balance of western methods, the awareness of herbal wisdom and preparation is shared, traditional uterine massage, yoni baths, laboring and birthing in position suitable to the mother, blessing ceremonies, organic gardening support, and the respect and incorporation of pregnancy and birthing customs belonging to the family are honored.

Birth in the Tradition™ believes in family involvement. We do not take over to manipulate labor or birth nor do we come to take over the role of the father or partner. We are there to support those who are key participants, while offering a safe space. Our skills are used when deemed necessary. However, we do realize that in some cultures, men hold their roles as support persons from the peripheral, while the midwife serves the primary role for the mother during her pregnancy, labor and birthing process.

Birth in the Tradition™ does not discriminate against nationality, race, religion, spirituality or sexuality. All babies are welcomed into the hands of the midwife.
