I really want to thank YOU, Augustine, because talking to you in class gave me the final nudge I was wanting, to make a decision that was truly right for me. The videos helped too!
-Brenda, new mother to Maverick
After taking Augustine's Art of Birthing class, my husband and I were so prepared for our son Thomas' birth. No other class could have better prepared me to deal with the pain of childbirth . I know that without having taken this class I never would have had birth experience that I wanted. The pain coping exercises help me to find my own personal way of dealing with pain and helped my husband to better understand my needs. Not only did my husband and I have a better birth after taking her class, but we felt closer to one another than we ever had. She helped us to understand birth as the spiritual and emotional experience that it was meant to be. She also provided valuable information which helped us to make many important decisions. All in all her class and practice was a wonderful experience that we will not soon forget.-Melissa, new mother to Thomas
"Augustine is a true Birth Warrior. She will do her best to help you have a beautiful birth experience. Her professional and technical knowledge will help you make the most informed decisions about your birth choices. You can trust Augustine's wisdom and experience; and trust is one of the most important requirements for any birth attendant. She recognizes that birth is not a medical event but a rite of passage that every mother has the right to claim. This class we took with her helped us both discuss our fears and anxiety about labor. My husband really took on the role of guardian. Labor is hard but I did it!!"
-Dorothy, new mother to Hannah
“These classes broadened our discussions about labor and birth procedures. It gave me an idea of what I could do to help during labor to protect the birth space.”
- Mike, new father to Hannah
"I met Augustine in my 6th month of pregnancy, when I began her Birthing from within classes. Before I started her class I had briefly tossed around the idea of hiring midwives planning to have a home birth. While attending my birthing class I got to know Augustine very well. Not only did I find her extremely educated in the entire spectrum of childbirth, but I also felt an extreme closeness to this woman I hardly knew. Augustine’s energy was vibrant, and at the same time soothing. She made me feel comforted at a time when everything in my life was new and confusing. It was not long after I had met Augustine that I decided I wanted Augustine to be that special person to help my boyfriend, my baby, and I go through this wonderful life changing event.
Augustine is extremely educated in Midwifery, as a childbirth educator she was able to bring much more to my birth experience then someone who has no background in Midwifery. From start to finish she was able to answer every question, comfort me with every concern, as well as provide the foundation we needed to bring our baby into this world. "
-Shannon, first-time mom to sammy
"I’m so glad I met you, Augustine. I know my pregnancy will be the joy it is meant to be because you are supporting me. We haven’t known each other long, but I feel so connected to you. It really is a cold, cold world out there, people thinking birth is a medical marvel, for the most part, but you make birth real, sacred, and a natural thing to honor. Thank you for your help in the Birth Trauma Resolution Classes, it really helped AJ and me. "
- Gertrude, new mother
"I found the "art of birthing" while searching for a class which was not the typical lamaze. I needed to learn what this labor was going to be all about and was I really going to survive the pain and still have any dignity left afterwards. After the first class I did not know if I really belonged because all the other women spoke so very passionately about having a natural birth. Augustine reassured me I was in the right class. The class focuses on the emotional process of birth and not the outcome. And indeed, I never felt pressured to have or plan a certain type of birth. I am proud however, to report I had an amazing natural birth experience. It would be wonderful if all women could expirence the "art of birthing" and be able to emotionally give birth to their little miracles. "
- Angela, first time mother to Victoria
I am warmly thinking back on Ryan’s birth and how your Birthing From Within classes helped us as a family.
Each class, we left feeling more prepared, relaxed and excited about our baby’s birth. As the mother, I no longer feared labor, but I was looking forward to experiencing this amazing rite of passage. I still feel such a sense of relief when I think about how your classes changed Mike each week. He became an educated, thinking, confident dad before my eyes. Class made him part of the pregnancy experience and no hospital program could have done that.
Rather than fearing the unknown, we felt prepared for the childbirth experience we wanted and sure that we could intelligently and confidently communicate with our needs.
Without your class, I never would have been comfortable being buck naked on all fours in the hospital while a nurse was attempting to put an I.V. in my hand. It seemed humorous even at the time considering I was 9cm dilated! I didn’t feel bullied or scared. I felt like the nurses were out of touch with reality about how natural having a baby is – sad for them – lucky me!
I still remember the necklace you were wearing while I was in labor. The round stone was my focus, my moaning was a release of the pain and helping open my body for the baby’s delivery.
I feel so damn lucky to think back and absolutely love our childbirth experience.
Thank you Augustine! "
- Vicki Robb, new mother
"Thanks again, Augustine, just wanted to drop you a line, you were very busy with bellies when we slipped out of the end of yesterday's class. I wanted to thank you again, for a wonderful class experience. your class is so valuable, no matter how many children one has had...I have gained so much from being a part of it. You have a very special gift and energy with women and it shines thru to all around you. I wish you much happiness & success in all your future endeavors with your new chapter in Oregon. The women there are so fortunate to have you become part of their community!"

Birthing From Within Philosophical Assumptions and Guiding Principals
1. Childbirth is a profound right of passage, not a medical event (even when medical care is a part of the birth).
2. The essence of childbirth preparation is self-discovery, not assimilating obstetric information.
3. The teacher is “midwife” to the parents’ discovery process, not the expert from whom wisdom flows.
4. Childbirth preparation is a continually evolving process (for parents and teachers), not a static structure of techniques and knowledge.
5. Parents’ individual needs and differences determine class content.
6. Active, creative self-expression is critical to childbirth preparation.
7. The purpose of childbirth class is to prepare mothers to give birth-in-awareness, not achieve a specific birth outcome.
8. Pregnancy and birth outcome are influenced by a variety of factors, but can’t be controlled by planning.
9. In order to help parents mobilize their coping resources, it is critical for childbirth classes to acknowledge that unexpected, unwelcome events may happen in labor.
10. Parents deserve support for any birth option which might be right for them (whether it might be drugs, technology, homebirth, or bottle-feeding).
11. Pain is an inevitable part of childbirth, yet much can be done to ease suffering.
12. Pain coping techniques work best when integrated into daily life, rather than “dusted off” for labor.
13. Fathers help best as birth guardians or loving partners, not as coaches, they also need support.
14. For parents, pregnancy, birth, and postpartum is a time of continuous learning and adjustment: holistic support and education should be available throughout that period.
15. Childbirth preparation is also parent preparation.
